Starting the 1972 Pub has been a labor of love, requiring personal investment from both owners. "Crowdfunding was part of our strategy, but we also used our own savings when grants didn't come through as anticipated," Hallum shares. However, since opening its doors in March 2025, the pub has seen a positive response from the community. “The best part has been people coming up to say thank you for creating this space,” she adds, highlighting the desire for more representation of women in sports.

The menu at 1972 Pub reflects the owners' dedication to providing a unique experience. Unlike typical bar food, Hallum and du Plessis prioritized healthy and inclusive options, including vegetarian and vegan fare. With favorites like wings, a signature burger, and elote hushpuppies, the pub also features a weekend brunch showcasing delightful meals such as steak frites and classic biscuits and gravy. “We want our patrons to enjoy great food while enthusiastically supporting women’s sports,” says Hallum.

With the WNBA season starting soon, the 1972 Pub is gearing up for a series of watch parties, especially focusing on the Dallas Wings, Texas’s only WNBA team. Events at the pub will not only celebrate basketball but also foster a greater community around women’s sports, positioning 1972 as a cornerstone in Austin’s vibrant sports culture.
