In a delightful addition to South Austin's culinary landscape, the husband-and-wife team, Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher, will unveil their newest venture, Boni's Bar Next Door, on March 6. Situated just a stone's throw away from their Michelin-recommended restaurant, Lenoir, this new establishment is set to offer the community a refined and inviting space for cocktails and tapas.
A Taste of History and Passion
The inspiration for Boni's Bar comes from Maher’s Spanish great-grandfather, Bonifacio, affectionately known as Boni. His colorful life—a journey from Spain to South America and beyond—served as a solid foundation for the bar’s identity. By incorporating elements of Boni’s heritage, from drinks inspired by Spanish cocktails to the use of local ingredients, Duplechan and Maher have ensured that the bar is not only about great service but also tells a rich story.
Welcoming Atmosphere, Timeless Design
Boni's is the first dedicated cocktail bar on South First Street, establishing it as a landmark in the vibrant Bouldin Creek neighborhood. The bar is situated within a beautifully preserved 1934 bungalow. Duplechan led the renovation, maintaining historic features while adding some personal touches: vintage furnishings and family photos create a warm, nostalgic ambience. Maher describes it as a cozy yet lively spot where the community can unwind after work or pop in for a drink after dinner at Lenoir.
Craft Cocktails and Delicious Small Plates
The cocktail menu at Boni's is inspired by traditional Spanish recipes, featuring drinks like ginitónica and a seasonal Boni’s margarita, all priced between $12 and $15. The bar will also provide a rotating selection of curated natural wines from Spain, draft beer, and cider to cater to varying tastes. To complement the drinks, a tapas-style menu will offer a delightful assortment of snacks. Diners can sample everything from spiced pork rinds to chocolate chip cookies infused with candied orange, aimed at creating a snacking rather than a full dining experience. Maher lightheartedly notes, "We're professional food service people... so the food is probably better than it needs to be."

With the goal of transforming the surrounding area into a little farm-to-table village, Duplechan and Maher hope their bar can be a spontaneous choice for locals looking to enjoy good company and quality beverages.
